So You're Thinking About Buying a Puppy

Buying a Puppy

So, you're thinking about buying a puppy...have you considered what this actually means?  You are about to take responsibility for the life of another member of the family for anything from 12-18 years if you're lucky, so this has to be a serious commitment.  Are you sure you're up to the task?

Have you considered -

  • feeding
  • exercise
  • training
  • socialization
  • veterinary costs
  • housing
  • fencing

These are all things to be thought through before you make the decision to buy a puppy.

If you've given all this plenty of careful consideration and you haven't been frightened off yet then you are most likely going to make a wonderful owner.

Please remember -

ANIMALS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU SAY "YES"

Saying you're "sorry" isn't good enough.  Please take the time to watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3Daz6_pWLo

As members of Dogs Victoria under the umbrella of the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) we are committed to upholding the integrity of our chosen breeds and only produce litters when we want pups for ourselves.  We abide by the Code of Practice governing all members and strive to improve our breeds based on our interpretation of their Breed Standards.

All puppies at Terraway are sold on Limited Register (not for exibition, breeding or export) unless by prior arrangement, and as such must be desexed.  This is a condition of purchase and you will be asked to sign a desexing contract which is legally binding.

Each and every litter we breed is well thought out and we always plan to keep a puppy to show.  For this reason we often run some or all of our puppies on until they are 10-12 weeks old before we are ready to make a firm decision on which one/s will stay at Terraway.  On the other hand, and just as important to us, is our emphasis on breeding beautiful, quality puppies as wonderful companion animals.

Be prepared to be asked a lot of questions and likewise, feel free to ask them of us.  Our priority is ALWAYS our puppies so please don't be offended when we ask you to provide character references from people who can vouch for you.  This is to ensure that all our puppies go to homes that can and will provide them with the love and support that they need for the rest of their lives.  In addition, home checks may be a prerequisite if we feel it is necessary to ensure the safety of our whippet puppies.

All our puppies are born and raised indoors until they are old enough to move to an outdoor puppy pen/yard where they are then exposed to a whole different environment.  Our puppies are thoroughly socialised, vaccinated, wormed, microchipped and Dogs Victoria registered.  They come with a week's supply of their current puppy food, a puppy information kit as well as their own collar and lead, toy and food bowl.  Puppies will have commenced lead and crate training, they will be familiar with car travel and they will be well their way to being housetrained by the time they are ready to go to their new homes.  We take great pride in the time and effort we put into all our puppies to ensure they have the very best start to life.

On the other side of the coin is our firm commitment to lifetime support for all of our puppies and their owners.  We are there for the long haul and we encourage all our puppy owners to keep in regular contact.  We're only too happy to assist in any way we can so no question is ever too big or too small...

If you feel you may be able to offer the kind of loving home our puppies deserve, if you are interested in purchasing a puppy or simply have some questions, please register your interest by completing the Contact Us form or feel free to phone or email us.  All enquiries are welcome.
